The letters are in the mail........
« on: May 27, 2010, 10:47:13 PM »
It's true, the letters with kindergarten lottery results are in the mail!  Ours arrived today.  We had immediate placement with sibling preference so the letter was simply affirmation.  For those that were anxiously awaiting the results, the wait is over!

Has anyone not received his/her letter that applied before the March 31st deadline?  Principals have received tentative kindergarten lists for next year (at least ours has....I can't positively say they ALL have).  A call to the school(s) that were applied to could yield placement information if the letter has not yet arrived.

While the mid-April deadline was missed, kudos to getting the results to families earlier than ever.  My now 4th grader didn't know where she had been placed until mid AUGUST!  Things are moving in a positive direction.

That's great news! And I agree that May is quite respectable. (Next year I suggest they SAY May, and then if they get the results out earlier, everyone will be pleasantly surprised, instead of the other way around. :) )

Are the high school letters out too, does anyone know? Usually they go first, but there's a lot more going on with the high schools this year.

My friend has been going in circles...

her soon to be kindergartener (who attended pre-k @ 23) did not get their #1 choice (#23), did not get their #2 choice (58)  did not get their #3 choice (#12) but, got their #4 choice....

She just cannot believe this! I'm not sure what steps she should take, and who she should talk to... any suggestions!?

That's a really tough situation -- I doubt there are many people who actually want their child to go to their "fourth choice" school -- when we went through both K and 7th grade placement, by the time I was that far down my list of choices, I was putting in anything as a space filler to make sure my application was complete. Although the district has a policy of waiting lists and going through the parent center, if a friend of mine was in this situation, I would tell her to call Karen Sangmeister in placement to find out exactly where she is on the waiting list and whether the school is likely to open up any more kindergarten spots over the summer. Also she should call the school #23 principal and tell her how much she wants to go to #23. Even though the pre-K teachers aren't technically part of the school, it's worth a try see if there's anything that teacher can do. If she has any friends who are involved parents already at 23, they might be able to do something as well -- tell the principal what a great addition their family would be to the school. And keep calling, even if there's no space now!

Unfortunately that's not such an uncommon situation -- it's too bad no one advised your friend not to put #58 as her second choice since I'm quite sure it fills entirely (and has a wait list) with people who put it as their first choice -- so it's kind of throwing away a choice.

Anyway, I would definitely call Karen to get a straight answer on where she is on the waitlist and what other options there are -- citywide with shorter or no waitlists, for example.

I'm not sure if 23 has a new permanent principal to call yet.

But tell your friend not to panic! I know that's easier said than done, but there are options and a lot changes over the summer.

Just for clarity,  a city wide can't really be put as a second choice (i.e. school #58, Montessori, dual language etc.).  I have a copy of the application here.  City wide assignments are chosen before zone assignments.  Then the 1st-4th choices for zone schools.

I would follow Hilary's advice and be sure to find out where their child is on the wait list for their city wide choice and all of the other choices they listed.   There could be a fair amount of jostling before the school year begins.

Thanks for clearing that up -- I thought maybe the citywide application process had changed (again.)

Thanks so much for the encouragement and suggestions... I'll pass them along to her... and continue to try to get her to log on herself!  :)

Also, I think I may have mis-typed/mis-thought (hellooooooo summer vacation)... I do believe #58 was her first choice, #23 was her second.

thanks again all!
